amalgamation choir | clay - πηλός

A few months ago, I had an idea: to see my vases alongside the incredible Amalgamation Choir. I reached out to Vasiliki, their brilliant conductor, and from our very first conversation, she was open, enthusiastic, and full of vision.

The choir’s current show, Clay - Πηλός, explores the elemental forces that shape the material I work with every day — earth, fire, water, and time. What better way to honour this theme, and celebrate an ensemble that has brought traditional Cypriot music to the contemporary stage for over a decade, than to create vessels inspired by Cypriot forms — coated with local soil from the regions many of these songs come from.

It has been a true honour to contribute to this milestone in their journey. To witness my ceramics woven into a performance that carries the stories, sounds, and soul of Cyprus has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my creative life.

Across five performances in three cities, I created a series of vases for the choir’s stage — some serving purely as set pieces, others as ritual props. The performance culminates in the deliberate and violent smashing of one of the vases, symbolising the cyclical nature of clay: from form to fragment, ready to be reclaimed and transformed once again into something new.

Endless thanks to Vasiliki and the extraordinary women of the Amalgamation Choir for inviting me into your world and trusting me with this part of the story.
